TOLOYAL [Mountain]

Toloyal, meaning mountain in Tsotsil, is an ever-present element in traditional Indigenous worldview and iconography. The abstraction of topographic maps represents the concept of where we stand and where we're going. The embroidered maps and retracted surfaces with organic pleats simulate the set of plate ruptures and vibrations that make up the Earth, and therefore ourselves.
Smooth, semi-transparent, and luminous fabrics, contrasted with raw, heavy textiles, exploring mountain-like motifs in weaving and embroidery.
The layers of the earth are represented in the enveloping canvases layered over each look, geometric silhouettes that play with textures and the lightness and heaviness of the fabrics. Versatile, genderless garments based on traditional Indigenous clothing, using only ties to fit the garments to the body.
In addition to continuing to collaborate with the San Andrés Larrainzar groups with textiles made on a backstrap loom and pedal loom, for this collection we collaborated with artisans from Chenalhó, Chiapas, a region that inspires the topographic maps featured in the collection as well as elements of its culture through embroidery and accessories such as traditional hats and bags hand-woven and dyed with natural dyes.
This collection is inspired by the fragmentation of the earth and its various layers, as well as its connection to the textile traditions of Chiapas, communities in which most of the garments were created in collaboration.
